Brunei - Thai-Brunei student exchange sought

THAI school administrators expressed interest in building an exchange programme with Bruneian schools during a school visit to Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) College yesterday.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, Dr Ruchanee Chungchoo, owner and director of Pramochwitthayaramintra School based in Bangkok, Thailand, said the visit marked the start of a long-standing friendship between Brunei and Thai educational institutions.

"I expect this is a good start to exchange students between Thailand and Brunei. We have to start our friendship from here," she said.

The partnership can promote mobility and exchange between both teachers and students from both countries, she said.

Dr Chungchoo added that Brunei and Thailand share a lot of common practices in its education and country to make them good partners in the exchange collaboration.

"Many things are the same, only minor things are different such as one year of kindergarten in Thailand, but in Brunei students spend two years in kindergarten. The school system is very similar."

The partnership will be able to promote cultural exchange to bridge the ties between the two countries while encouraging students to immerse themselves in and respect the cultures of their counterparts, Dr Chungchoo told the paper.

"We hope today will start our relationship between Brunei and Thailand for our ASEAN," she said.

Principal of SOAS College Hj Ismail Hj Zainal, who hosted the visit, agreed that the visit is just the beginning of a long journey in Brunei and Thailand's relationship in education.

"We are on the same boat as educators. Our main aim is to educate our students so sharing is one (crucial) part of education. We don't lose anything if we don't share, but we can gain more if we do share with one another."

He added that the visit from the ASEAN teachers was "a very good platform" for teachers in ASEAN member countries to continue their relations in the future.

Twenty-five senior teachers and school administrators visited the SOAS College yesterday morning to learn more about the Brunei education system on the secondary level. Later in the afternoon, they made their way to Chung Hwa Middle School in the capital to familiarise with education in Chinese schools.

The visit was made after the group concluded the 27th ASEAN Council of Teachers (ACT) Convention from February 25-26.
