Vietnam - HCMC to pay contraceptive costs for residents

Every citizen who has actually resided in Ho Chi Minh City for at least 6 months will be exempted from cost of their contraception, according to the city authorities’ decision on its population and family planning policy for 2011-2015.

The decision will be applied from March 5, 2012.

Under the new regulation, the cost exemption is applied for contraception from all heath facilities, including ward and commune health centers, regional obstetrics and gynecological centers, lying-in hospitals, districts’ hospitals, hospitals with a department of obstetrics and family planning.

Particularly, those who choose to apply contraception by sterilization will also be given free necessary medicines along with an allowance of VND1 million (US$48).

Such sterilization is required to be performed at hospitals with a department of obstetrics and family planning, the city center for reproductive health care, or districts’ hospitals and preventive health centers.

Those who apply contraceptive means yet fail in their contraception plan, or suffer heath complications, will be given free care and treatment.
