Vietnam - Deals lift Belgium-Vietnam economic ties

Belgian and Vietnamese firms signed off on scores of deals last week during a Crown Prince Philippe-led Belgian trade delegation to Vietnam.

Among the 37 deals struck was an agreement between Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Transportation and Belgium’s Dredging International NV. The deal is for the execution of the second phase of the first stage of dredging work for the Soai Rap navigation channel.

The $30 million contract involves the dredging of about 15 million cubic metres to deepen and widen the existing Soai Rap navigation channel. Work is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2012. This contract was made possible thanks to Belgium financial support.

In addition, Dredging International NV and Vietnam’s Regina Construction and Investment Corporation signed an agreement on land reclamation works in Binh Thuan province. The contract involves dredging and reclamation works to create 442 hectares on artificial islands for the Phu Hai service complex.

Partyspace BVBA, a Belgium-based company selling party materials and Ho Chi Minh City-based Arrow Vietnam Company Limited, which produces large format digital printing and point-of-sales advertising materials, entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in marketing and sales, product design and manufacturing. Links were also created across education, society and public projects.

Among these were agreements between the CCIBV (Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie Belgique-Vietnam) and Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations, between Belgium’s OCS-Overseas Containers NV and Vietnam’s ALC Trading and Services Corporation, between the Belgian-Vietnamese Alliance and Education for Development Vietnam, and among FUNDP University, Ghent University and Can Tho University.

Also listed were cooperation agreements between the Lam Dong People’s Committee and Provincial Government of East Flanders on horticulture and an MoU amongst the Provincial Government of East Flanders, Ghent University and Vietnam’s Research Institute for Agriculture 2 in the field of aquaculture.

Notably, the two biggest suppliers of quality farm feed for shrimp and fish in Vietnam – Belgium-based Inve Aquaculture and Uni-President Vietnam – signed a far reaching strategic corporation agreement on creating a vision for the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry.

The deal will see Uni-President supply Inve Aquaculture with specialty health products through their extensive network of farmers nationwide, offering their customer base a complete nutrition and health solution range.
