Vietnam - Vietnamese IELTS test takers nearly double in 5 years

The number of Vietnamese candidates taking the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test has almost doubled over the past five years, the British Council Vietnam said in a news release.

Specifically, Vietnam saw 14 percent growth in the number of candidates sitting for the test and a 50 percent increase in those scoring 8.0 or above out of 9.0 on it during the 2011-12 academic year.

Its candidates’ average score has increased across all four skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing, with the biggest improvement in reading skills.

Vietnamese test takers also scored a higher overall band average than that of their peers in Taiwan, Thailand, China, and Japan.

Potential entry into academic institutions in the U.K., the U.S., Australia, Canada, and many other destinations was the main reason cited by local candidates for their taking the test, said Alison Ball, Ho Chi Minh City Director for British Council Vietnam.

“Demand for IELTS in Vietnam remains impressive … [and every year] the standards get higher and higher.”

The number of IELTS test takers grew 12 percent year-on-year to a record 1.7 million around the world in 2011, the seventeenth year of continual growth, with the number of tests taken tripling since 2005.

An international standardized test of English language proficiency, IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL).

It is now recognized by more than 7,000 organisations including educational institutions, employers, professional associations, and governments in 135 countries around the world.
