Brunei - $118m energy costs can be saved annually

Lumut COGEN Plant expansion MoU signed

THE proposed expansion of the COGEN Plant at Lumut Power Station will help meet Brunei's growing energy for the next 15 years or more, whilst saving approximately $118 million per year due to its efficiency, the Energy Minister said yesterday at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between three parties involved in the project.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar, Minister of the Energy Department at the Prime Minister's Office (EDPMO), said that the expansion of the COGEN (Co-Generation) plant, which is estimated to be completed in the middle of 2014, will allow the Lumut Power Plant to have an installed capacity of 246 MW (megawatt), an addition of 66 MW.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Mohammad Yasmin, delivered his speech at the MoU signing between the Brunei government, Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd and Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd, to implement a joint venture project for the expansion of the COGEN Lumut Power Station.

"In the next five years, the power demand is expected to increase by 36 MW," said the minister, adding that 16 MW will be due to energy needs by 4,147 new houses, and 20 MW to meet BSP's growing demand, due to its increasing activity.

He added, however, that additional capacity will be required in 15 to 20 years time, and the demand and supply situation will be reviewed on an annual basis.

The new expanded plant will boost an improved efficiency of greater than 60 per cent, through the application of combined heat and power integration or Co-Generation.

The minister, told the Bruneian media on the sidelines of the signing, that the total cost of project will be approximately $300 million, and with regards to saving of natural gas consumption, the investment return can be in less than three years.

The minister also said that he wanted the project "to showcase not only the combined efforts between the government, BLNG and BSP, but also the roles played by Bruneian companies in providing support to this (expansion) project".
