Medical facilities need to focus on innovations and improvements in the quality of health services in line with the recently adjusted medical fees.

Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said this on October 17 at a meeting in Hanoi to review the health sector’s performance so far this year, devise plans for 2013, and develop a master plan for the health system in the 2020-2030 period.
Minister Tien stressed that Ministry leaders have been always trying to improve the health sector and health care services and keep hospital fees low satisfy the public demand.

But hospitals need to reform their procedures, especially for reception and examinations, which is when patient problems are usually diagnosed.

According to the Ministry of Health, more than 11,000 medical workers have visited local doctors in district clinics to help them improve their skills and quality of treatment by apprising them on about 6,676 techniques.

The ministry reported that since last year there has been a decline in infectious cases and death rates from contagious diseases. Noticeably, two satellite hospitals of Bach Mai and Viet Duc in Hanoi have been effective in reducing pressure in two of the bigger hospitals by succeeding in persuading patients to undertake treatment there.

In nine months of this year, the health sector has made significant achievements in preventing and controlling the spread of epidemics and it has invested in infrastructure to reduce overloads.

The sector has also implemented many programmes to provide more people with health insurance, ensure food hygiene and safety, protect the health of mothers and children, and ensure a sufficient supply of medicine.

However, the ministry expressed deep concern over the spread of hand-foot-mouth, rubella and dengue fever diseases nationwide, with a drastic increase in the number of patients recently. Local authorities are also being blamed for lax behavior and lack of support in preventing infections.

In 2013, the sector will focus on reducing hospital overloads, increasing the coverage of health insurance, controlling food quality, and preventing epidemics.
