Brunei - Brunei girl guides lauded for progress

THE Patron of the Olave Baden-Powell Society, HRH Princess Benedikte of Denmark, lauded the progress that the Brunei Darussalam's girl guides had made during her visit to the Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam (PPPBD) headquarters in Anggerek Desa yesterday.

"I think they (the Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam) have been making good progress," HRH told journalists.

She stressed the importance of women's contributions in helping others and urged them to learn more and go forward to make an impact in their respective roles within the community. "The women should talk to their own families to do some work for other people," she said. The women, whom she described as 'strong legs' in the family also need to be supported, she added.

During the visit here to enhance the friendship and cooperation with PPPBD, HRH Princess Benedikte presented Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, with an insignia in recognition of Her Majesty's support of the Olave Baden-Powell Society.

According to a statement by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), HRH Princess Benedikte, long-serving Patron of the Olave Baden-Powell Society, has travelled to Brunei specially to make the presentation.

Her Majesty has chosen to support the international work of girl guides Guides by becoming a donor to the Olave Baden-Powell Society. "Her Majesty believes that the work done through girl guiding in developing girls and young women is an important way to ensure women are ready and trained to take leadership roles within their communities and their nations," added the statement. The Olave Baden-Powell Society was founded more than 30 years ago and it is the major financial supporter of the WAGGGS.

Accompanying HRH Princess Benedikte during the visit yesterday were Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Tengku Puan Pahang Tunku Azizah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Iskandar, the Royal Patron of the Asia Pacific Girl Guides; Vibeke Riemer, president of the Olave Baden-Powell Society; and Ginny Radford, vice president of Olave Baden-Powell Society.

Riemer said that HRH Princess Benedikte would like to convey that it is important to be a girl guide as the its members can learn important aspects such as to build self-esteem, attend leadership training, which will be beneficial for their future endeavour.

Speaking to reporters, KDYTM Tengku Puan Pahang said that her visit to Brunei is forge friendship with PPPBD.

"We visit many countries to make sure that the girl guides and girl scouts," she said.

During the visit to PPPBD Headquarter in Anggerek Desa both HRH Princess Benedikte and KDYTM Tengku Puan Pahang took the opportunity to tour the garden and planted durian trees at the Royal Garden, meeting with members of PPPBD and observed their activities.

The entourage, who arrived on Sunday leaves Brunei today.
