Brunei - Brunei seen doing well in data centres

BRUNEI'S location, human resources and cheap power rates make it conducive to the development of a data centre industry, an executive from a Korean company said yesterday.

At the Korean Brunei Business Forum held at the Radisson Hotel and organised by the Korean embassy, Kevin Lee (pictured), marketing director of KT Corporation (formerly known as Korea Telecom), said that from a human resources standpoint, the Sultanate has a competitive edge.

"Brunei has strong, highly educated people with the language capability to be competitive for exporting any kind of ICT solutions to neighbouring countries," said Lee.

He also said that geographically, Brunei was at an advantage.

"Brunei is free from natural disasters and that is one good point already," he noted.

When the tsunami hit Japan, for instance, Korea worked together with its neighbour to open up data recovery centres for the disaster-struck country, he said.

"Likewise, Brunei can use this strategy to boost Brunei in data centre, and they can empower their neighbouring countries like Singapore," he said.

Meanwhile, he said that Brunei was well-equipped in terms of infrastructure, adding that the Sultanate had highly educated people who could operate the centres well.

He added that Brunei's low power rates are key to the success of the industry.

"We would need to study it closer to get more details, but electricity is very important because without it, data centres are nothing," he said.

Lee said tthat Brunei should hop on the bandwagon and tap into the potential of data centres "soon" because the industry is on the rise.

"There is currently a data explosion everywhere because of smartphones and tablets, in fact it has skyrocketed, so we need more data centres accordingly because all data needs to be stored in data centre," he said.

Google, for instance, indicated that it wanted to build a data centre in Singapore for the Asian market, he noted, adding that Brunei could also attract foreign companies that might invest on it.
