MYANMAR President His Excellency U Thein Sein arrived yesterday in the capital on a three-day state visit aimed at bolstering bilateral ties ahead of Brunei's ASEAN chairmanship next year.

Thein Sein previously visited Brunei in 2008 as prime minister, a position abolished by Myanmar's government last year. The Myanmar president is looking to strengthen already cordial bilateral relations in the context of ASEAN, and to promote areas of cooperation for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Present at the Brunei International Airport to welcome the president yesterday was Minister of Industry and Primary Resources Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, senior government officers and Myanmar officials in Brunei Darussalam.

Brunei established diplomatic relations with Myanmar in 1993, and set up an embassy in Yangon in 2007.
