The Eastern Coach Station in Ho Chi Minh City has said fares for coaches from the metropolis to other areas are expected to rise by 20-60 percent during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

The increase in fares is aimed at making up for the loss in revenue for coaches that will return to HCMC with low passenger numbers after taking people to their hometowns for the holiday, said Thuong Thanh Hai, deputy director of the station.

Accordingly, for trips to Hue and other areas farther to north, the fare will be increased by 20 percent from January 26-29, 2013, by 40 percent from January 30 to February 2, and by 60 percent from February 3 to 9, Hai said.

For trips to Binh Thuan, Quang Nam, Da Nang, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Kon Tum Province, the fare will rise by 40 percent from January 31 to February 2, and by 60 percent from February 10 to 12.

Meanwhile, passengers traveling to Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc or Lam Dong Province from February 3 to 9 and from February 10 to 12 will pay a 60 percent and 20 percent higher fare, respectively.

As for trips to Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the fare will rise by 40 percent from February 5 to 15, while the fares will increase by the same amount for trips to Dong Nai from February 6-12, and for trips to western provinces from February 6 to 11.

Counters No. 13 and No. 14 at the Station will sell advance tickets to passengers, Hai said.

This year, the Lunar New Year will fall on February 10, 2013.
