Vietnam - Project to build learning society approved

A project to create a society of learning for the 2012-2020 period has been approved by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan.

The project sets out a series of targets that will benefit various groups of people. Firstly, 98 percent of people aged between 15 and 60 will be able to read and write by 2020.

The project aims to have 70 percent of rural labourers join courses to improve their education and skills. It will also aims at providing secondary school education or equivalent training for 90 percent of processing and industrial zone workers, and vocational training for 95 percent of workers.

Officials and public servants will learn a foreign language and receive IT training.

Every official and public servant from central to district levels will continue training courses as currently regulated. 100 percent of commune-level officials will attend courses on leadership and management skills.

Annually, around 50 percent of students and pupils will be taught life skills.
