A group of Malaysians currently living abroad has organised a Jom Balik Undi (JBU) or “Let's Go Home and Vote” campaign to encourage overseas Malaysians to return and vote in the coming general election.

A press statement issued by William de Cruz and Adriene Leong, the organisers for the campaign for Malaysians in Australia, said it was an effort to get all Malaysians living and working abroad to play a part in having their voices heard at the 13 general election.

“We will do this by ensuring the highest possible voter turnout on Malaysian soil and cast our votes in full force,” they said in a statement yesterday.

They urged citizens abroad who could afford the trip home to do so and advised Malaysian-registered voters who cannot return home to submit their applications to be postal voters as soon as possible.

De Cruz and Leong said those who were interested to raise awareness of the campaign can participate by submitting their photographs to the JBU facebook page at www.facebook.com/JomBalikUndi-Malaysia.

Election Commission deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar was reported to have said in October that Malaysians overseas could apply online early to vote by post in the coming general election.

He said Malaysians registered as absentee voters, should update their particulars through the EC website to facilitate the delivery of Priority Envelopes containing ballot papers for them.

Wan Ahmad also said the conditions stipulated for postal voters are that they should be a registered voter; has to be in the country for at least 30 days in five years before the dissolution of Parliament or State Assembly; and living overseas with the exception of south Thailand, Singapore, Brunei and Kalimantan.
