BANGKOK, 9 July 2014 (NNT) – The Ministry of Labor has introduced a new mobile application that translates the languages of ASEAN nations in hopes of facilitating workers and businesspeople in their communication when the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) officially opens.

Permanent Secretary for Labor Jeerasak Sukonthachart today chaired an event called “Wake up Worker” in the Labor Ministry’s compound, with the participation from over 100 students, workers and entrepreneurs. The event was targeted to boost the readiness of participants, particularly those in the labor industry, for the AEC and consequential changes.

During his opening speech, Mr Jeerasak stated that the ministry was implementing several measures to accommodate Thai workers in the AEC era. Among the examples raised were the facilitation of labor migration, setting up of a skilled labor certification system, establishment of an innovative training facility, assurance of workplace safety and improvement of the social security system.

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of a new app called “Happy Talk AEC”, which was set up under the Labor Ministry’s cooperation with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and the Thai Federation on Logistics.

The app can translate Thai into other ASEAN languages as well as Mandarin and vice versa, providing convenience for workers and business operators who need to communicate with their ASEAN counterparts. The app is now available for download free of charge.
