Vietnam - 53 million people supported by health insurance

After two years of implementing the law on health insurance, 53 million people, or 60% of the population are participating in the national health insurance programme, according to the Ministry of Health.
In 2010, health insurance card holders visited and received health check-ups and medical treatment at healthcare establishments across the country 106 million times.
In addition to the 50 central hospitals, there are 510 provincial healthcare establishments, 1,190 at the district level and 276 private medical centres in Vietnam. There are also 6,178 clinics in communes as well as other units across the country that provide healthcare for national health insurance participants.
This year’s Health Insurance Day which falls on July 1, has the theme “Improving Access to Healthcare Services for the Poor, Ethnic Minorities and Children under Six.” The annual event aims at promoting the health insurance law and ensuring health insurance card holders, especially those living in disadvantaged areas and children under six years old enjoy their rights to health insurance under the law.
