Laos - Japan to offer Laos 5.2 bil. yen grant aid to improve infrastructure

Japan agreed with Laos on Tuesday to extend up to 5.21 billion yen in grant aid to improve an airport and highway in the Southeast Asian nation.

Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto and visiting Laotian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign MinisterThongloun Sisoulith exchanged notes on Japan's assistance to expand an international airport in Vientiane as well as repair and upgrade a national highway in the country.

The highway is part of the East-West Economic Corridor development project to build an arterial road of around 1,500 kilometers, which involves Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. The airport will be expanded in time for the Asia-Europe Meeting to be hosted by Laos in Japanese officials said.

At the outset of the two ministers' meeting, Matsumoto expressed gratitude for Laotian support for Japan in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

On Monday, the Laotian minister traveled to the city of Natori in Miyagi Prefecture, one of the areas ravaged by the March disaster, and donated to the city $320,000 collected from citizens in Laos. Three Laotian students live in Natori, according to the Japanese officials.
