On November 4, during a meeting to review the 6-year implementation of the Politburo's Resolution 36-NQ/TW on work for overseas Vietnamese, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Gia Khiem confirmed that the country considered work for overseas Vietnamese the work of the whole political system.
Speaking at the meeting involving nearly 400 delegates from central and local ministries, agencies and unions from 63 provinces and cities, the Deputy Prime Minister said that the implementation of the resolution has seen the participation of agencies not only at the central but also local level.
"Over the past six years, the work has focused on building policies and specific measures, including issues relating to nationalities, housing and relatives, to bring overseas Vietnamese forward to the nation," he said.
According to the report by the Deputy Foreign Minister and Chairman of the State Commission on Overseas Vietnamese Nguyen Thanh Son, over the past six years, important changes have been seen in the thought and action among agencies and people.
The building of policies to protect overseas Vietnamese has been focused on, and the mobilization of the community has been reinforced. "Overseas Vietnamese trust more and more on the renewal process and the country's development for the target of a rich people, strong nation, and an democratic, equitable and advanced society," he said.
In the near future, according to Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, the implementation will continue to be implemented, with a focus on combating more strongly on reactionary forces and wrong points of view at international forums, and increase the national unity.
There are currently over 4 million Vietnamese people living in 103 countries and territories. Each year some 500,000 overseas Vietnamese return to Vietnam to study the investment and business opportunities in the homeland. So far overseas Vietnamese have carried out over 3,200 projects worth nearly USD 5.7 billion. Each year the remittance by overseas Vietnamese increases by 10-15%, with USD 6.7 billion in 2007, USD 7.4 billion in 2008 and USD 6.8 billion in 2009.
Over the past six years, the State Commission on Overseas Vietnamese has regularly organized large scale activities for overseas Vietnamese and invited overseas Vietnamese to become involved in all big events of the country.
