Singapore - Let's help children and pregnant women

IT IS heartening to read in the article "S'poreans give S$34m for Japan" (Aug 5) about the collection to help Japan's earthquake and tsunami survivors.

The Singapore Red Cross plans to build a multi-purpose hall, a temporary care centre and a temporary hospital in the affected areas.

It is working with our Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Japanese authorities to identify projects that could be funded from the remaining donations.

How about helping children in the affected areas, especially those living near the crippled nuclear plant?

Radiation poses higher risks to children than adults. There are reports that some parents living near the nuclear plant are facing a dilemma: To evacuate their children or live with radiation anxiety; to part with their children or part with their existing jobs and homes.

Special care must also be given to protecting pregnant women in the affected areas.

I read a report online that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao had invited 100 Japanese children aged between 10 and 14 to relax in Hainan island for a week. The organisers had even prepared a special itinerary to cater to the children's psychological needs.

Singaporeans, together with the Red Cross and the MFA, can do much more in helping children and pregnant women in the affected areas of Japan.
