Germany has provided €7 million (US$9.88 million) for a project aiming to prevent deforestation and forest degradation in the border areas of central Vietnam and southern Laos.
The four-year Annamites Carbon Sinks and Biodiversity (CarBi) project will target an area of 200,000 hectares of transboundary forests.
The area comprises of two sao la (one of the world's rarest mammals) reserves in Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam provinces, the extended Bach Ma National Park in Vietnam and the Xe Sap National Protected Area in Laos.
The project is expected to prevent emissions of 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide because of deforestation and forest degradation.
The project will be implemented by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Vietnam and WWF Germany will contribute an additional €1.2 million in funding.
