Japan - Ministry eyes power plants in parks

The infrastructure ministry has devised plans to launch a feasibility study in 2012 on park-based biomass power generation using plant-derived trash, such as grass clippings and tree trimmings, sources said Saturday.
The Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry is looking at converting plant-derived trash into biomass resources at power facilities that would be set up in parks, they said.
Electricity generated at the biomass facilities will be used to power lighting equipment at the parks, but they will also be employed to deliver power to evacuation centers set up in parks after natural disasters, such as earthquakes.
Distribution of power to rescue bases run by the Self-Defense Forces and other emergency groups is also being eyed, they said.
The ministry will ask the government to allocate several hundred million yen in the fiscal 2012 state budget so it can eventually set up such biomass facilities nationwide.
