Singapore - Strong scientific base will give S'pore edge to stay ahead: Lawrence Wong

SINGAPORE: Minister of State for Defence and Education Lawrence Wong said a strong scientific base will give Singapore the technological edge to stay ahead.

Mr Wong said this at a science competition for schools, The Amazing Science-X Challenge, at the Singapore Science Centre on Saturday afternoon.

146 teams from 63 schools battled for the title of Singapore's most creative science exhibit.

Among the quirky winning items is a bicycle that balances itself from Nanyang Polytechnic.

The project team said it is just a prototype, but the idea could be interesting for people who have trouble riding bicycles.

Project leader Wang Rong, a final year student from Nanyang Polytechnic, said: "Because balancing, for them, is very difficult, so we wanted to give the idea a try."

The annual competition is in its third year and aims to create interest in science and technology.

The competition also gives young Singaporeans another platform to gain the skills needed for the country's knowledge economy.

Mr Wong said: "It's a spirit of curiosity. Being interested in the world around you, finding out what works, what doesn't work, and always thinking of new and better ways of doing things. And that spirit is important for all of our students."

And that, Mr Wong said, is the spirit of science.

The competition is jointly organised by DSO National Laboratories, the National University of Singapore Science Faculty and the Science Centre. The Science Centre said selected exhibits may also be made permanent at the centre.
