Vietnam - CDC warns travellers of Vietnam enterovirus epidemic

An enterovirus epidemic has reached its height in Vietnam, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warned Thursday, urging parents with children under three to take precautions against the disease when travelling in Southeast Asia.

Southeast Asian countries are in their enterovirus season, with an epidemic of enterovirus 71 (EV-71) infections breaking out in Vietnam, the CDC said. Children should wash hands thoroughly and parents should pay extra attention to food sanitation.

CDC deputy director Shih Wen-yi said an enterovirus epidemic breaks out every two to three years in the past two decades in the West Pacific region.

Out of the 42,673 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease reported in Vietnam, half of them are caused by EV-71.

As school starts, cases are expected to rise, with most of them occurring in central and southern provinces in Vietnam.

According to Shih, enterovirus infections are both a respiratory and gastrointestinal disease and are highly infectious, especially in kindergartens, elementary schools, and homes.

Adults should pay extra attention to sanitation and make sure children are in an environment that is well ventilated, Shih said.
