The
inner-city of Hanoi is running out of land school construction, resulting in a
serious shortage of classroom space in many wards
The information was given by officials from
the municipal Department of Education and Training at a recent meeting to seek
measures on deal with the lack of schools.
In order to meet the city's target, there is a
need for 5.4 million square metres for schools. This figure includes 2.33
million for preschools, 1.96 million for primary schools and the rest for
secondary schools.
At the end of the 2010-2011 school year, 44
wards in Hanoi lacked public schools.
Ten wards do not have public primary schools, most
of these are located in inner-city districts; and 28 wards still lack secondary
schools. Only two out of 17 new urban areas in the city have enough public
classroom space to meet students' demands.
The department has said that local school
districts and agencies will soon discuss enlarging the existing schools of the
inner-city to ease the problem.
For suburban districts, delegates proposed
finding and utilising unused land, as well as reappropriating 5% of land area
formerly planned for public works to build schools.
