Plastic bags will be subject to a tax of VND30,000-50,000 a kilogram when the Environmental Protection Tax Law takes effect next year, a conference was informed yesterday in Ho Chi Minh City.
Ready-packed bags and those that meet the environmental-friendliness criteria required by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment are not subject to the taxation.
The tax law is expected to help reduce the number of disposable plastic bags used in supermarkets and shopping centers in 2015 by 40 percent, with 2010 as the base year.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will soon begin classifying the types of plastic bags to be taxed as well as the corresponding tax rates to apply to them.
