Prime
Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday, Sep 8, received Singapore's newly-appointed
Minister of Foreign Affairs, K. Shanmugam.
Dung applauded K. Shan-mugam's first visit to
Viet Nam in his role as Singapore's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Expressing his pleasure at the development of
the friendship between the two countries, Dung said he wanted the two sides to
effectively implement the agreement linking the two economies that the two
Governments had signed.
The two countries should also continue to
boost co-operation in human resources, education, healthcare, national defence
and security.
K. Shanmugam briefed the Prime Minister on the
outcome of a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Binh Minh, saying
that they had reached agreements on many issues related to economics and trade.
K. Shanmugam applauded the guidance document
for the implementation of the Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the East
Sea (DOC) approved by ASEAN and China, and wished the Code of the Conduct on
the East Sea (COC) would soon be discussed and approved.
The minister said Singaporean companies always
considered Viet Nam an attractive investment destination with a stable
investment environment, asking the Vietnamese Government to continue to create
favourable conditions for Singaporean investors.
Highly appreciating Viet Nam's achievements in
the food sector, he said he hoped the country would foster co-operation and
would be a stable supplier of food for Singapore in the future.
Following a meeting earlier the same day, the
two foreign ministers affirmed that Viet Nam and Singapore would continue to
develop the friendly and multifaceted co-operative ties in the spirit of the
"Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Co-operation Framework for the 21st
century", signed in 2004.
The two sides discussed measures to foster the
relationship between the two countries, including preparations for the official
visit of President Truong Tan Sang to Singapore, considering it an important
event bringing new co-operative opportunities for the two countries.
They also agreed to organise the sixth
political consultation in Singapore by the end of this year.
The two ministers also spoke about how to
exchange and seek solutions to make Vietnamese goods more attractive to the
Singapore market as well as ways to link Vietnamese enterprises with
Singaporean partners to penetrate the world economy.
They wished the two countries would continue
to discuss expanding into the fields of urban management and human resource
development.
The two sides agreed to maintain close
co-ordination and co-operation at regional and international fora such as the
United Nations, the East Asia Summit, the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation
Forum and the Trans-Pacific Economic Partner Agreement.
The two ministers also agreed that maintaining
peace, stability, and free shipping on the East Sea was in the interests of all
countries in the region and the world, and related parties should increase
exchanges and consultations with each other in a peaceful way, avoiding the use
of force.
K. Shanmugam's visit was made at the
invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Binh Minh.
