Vietnam - Tropical depression worsens flooding in Vietnam

As a tropical depression in the East Sea is upgrading into a storm, central and southern Vietnam is suffering from more floods and heavy rain, the Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre said.

At noon yesterday, a depression with a wind velocity of 39-62 kph and gust of 75-87 kph could be located 250 km in the east and northeast off the coach between Quang Nam and Binh Dinh provinces.

The depression is moving slowly but may turn into a tropical storm in a few days to come, the center forecast.

The depression has brought more rain to many central provinces, including Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Binh, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai and Kontum.

The rainfall was measured at 80-100 mm in Kontum and Dak Nong and at 200-300 mm from Thua Thien-Hue to Quang Ngai yesterday.

The heaviest rainfalls, at 458 mm and 422 mm, were recorded in Quang Tri’s My Chanh District and Thua Thien-Hue’s A Luoi Town, respectively.

Many rivers in central provinces such as the Huong and Vu Gia rivers have risen fast and submerged many residential and farming areas.

In Quang Nam, 25,000 people in Nam Tra My District have been isolated by flooding while 24 households in a mountainous area are being threatened by possible rockslides.

In Thua Thien-Hue, residents in Huong Tra and Quang Dien districts have reserved food in case of a prolonged isolation due to fast-growing floods.

Landslides have damaged many sections of National Highway 49 in A Luoi Town which local authorities are trying to repair.

More than 200 hectares in Quang Binh have been submerged as the Kien Giang River has been rising.

In the Mekong Delta, flooding remained serious in many provinces yesterday. The level of the Tien River in Tan Chau was 4.7 m, or 0.2 m higher than Alarming Level 3. The Hau River level in Chau Doc was measured at 4.05 m, 0.05 m above the same alarming level.

A dyke system in Dong Thap’s Hong Ngu Town was broken due to floods, causing serious damage to about 300 people who need help as soon as possible, local authorities reported.

Le Vinh Tan, Secretary of the Dong Thap Province Party Committee, said the province was trying to protect 8,000 ha of rice in Hong Ngu.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat yesterday urged authorities in central and southern provinces to take act immediately to protect people’s life and property.

“Residents in areas threatened by landslides or rockslides must be moved to safe places immediately,” he said. “Heads of local governments will be held accountable for any death caused by their shortcomings in coping with the disaster.”
