ASEAN - ASEAN should translate one identity into its programs

Malaysia will propose that Asean's one identity be translated into the main programmes of member countries at the Asean Culture Ministers Conference starting Monday.

Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said it is in line with the new Asean charter to create the Asean identity philosophy.

"Culture should be reactivated so that the people of member countries can unite in programmes that will further reinforce a sense of belonging," he told RTM and Bernama at KL International Airport (KLIA) here today.

He said Malaysia also felt the conference should not not be used as platform to discuss the workforce issue in Malaysia or in other countries.

"This is because some member countries intend to propose that the conference discuss the issue. Let the issue be decided by the ministers and agencies concerned and not via a cultural forum."

Rais said the conference is also expected to discuss the rotation of cultural meeting among Asean member countries.

The three-day Asean Culture Ministers Conference will be held in Semarang, Indonesia.
