Two
Indonesian children have died of bird flu on the popular tourist island of
Bali, the first local deaths from the illness in seven months.
Hospital officials said Monday that a 10-year
boy and his 5-year old sister both died over the weekend after testing positive
for the H5N1 virus. They reportedly had come into direct contact with dead
birds near their house.
Indonesia has been hardest hit by the virus,
with 148 deaths since 2003. The last was in March.
The bird flu virus that swept much of the
globe three years ago can still be found in a handful of countries, including
Indonesia, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India and Vietnam.
The World Health Organization says Indonesia
accounts for nearly half the 333 human fatalities worldwide.
