JOHOR BARU - The most common mistake made
by flood victims is to disregard advice to move out when flooding occurs.
"Their stubborn attitude is the main
reason why some lives are lost during floods," said Johor Fire and Rescue
Department director Abdul Ghani Daud.
He said many people believed rising flood
waters would recede quickly and not harm them.
"Many people choose to stay in their
homes instead of moving to relief centres," he said.
He advised residents especially those living
in flood-prone areas to always be vigilant and follow the directions of
authorities when floods occur.
Abdul Ghani said that more than 1,100
personnel would be on standby during the rainy season.
"We have also received 14 new
boats," he said, adding that the department now had a total of 94 boats.
State Welfare department director Khatijah
Abdullah said that RM250,000 worth of essential items including food had been
distributed.
"In total, some 421 department staff and
718 registered volunteers will be on standby," she said.
In Kuala Terengganu, Deputy Health Minister
Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said the ministry had set up health and
medical teams in every state.
"The medical teams will provide treatment
while the health teams will educate flood victims on proper hygiene," she
said yesterday.
Terengganu Civil Defence department director
Lt Kol Kamal Mokhtar said its 2,000-strong personnel would be on standby.
