Malaysia - Malaysia gears up to face storms

As the raging floodwaters inundated parts of Thailand, local authorities in Malaysia are bracing for the worst.

With the yearly north-east monsoon season just around the corner, the Malaysian National Security Council has rolled up its sleeves to keep problems at bay.

Malaysia's Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the Social Welfare Department had identified 5,139 flood relief centres that could accommodate 1,404,334 people.

"Preparations have been made to ensure that food and other necessities are sufficient," she said.

Based on past experiences, Shahrizat said volunteers and those in charge had been given sufficient training to handle disaster relief, especially in managing the centres, cooking and distributing food as well as handling the distribution of clothes, blankets, mats and other necessities.

"At our post-Cabinet meeting today, we discussed the preparation for possible floods in November and December," she told The Star yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Department urged people in flood-prone areas to heed the call of authorities when ordered to evacuate.

"They must ensure that their electrical appliances are switched off. Be careful of snakes and keep important documents such as identity cards and birth certificates at hand"

The department also advised parents to keep a close watch on their children should floods occur.
