SINGAPORE: Singapore's Health Minister Gan Kim Yong has stressed the importance of a multi-pronged approach involving partner countries to build a strong defence against transnational pandemics.
He was speaking at a World Health Organisation (WHO) conference, held in Singapore and jointly organised by Singapore's Health Ministry and the Economic Development Board.
He said: "The warning signs are already there - the emergence of virulent infectious diseases like the H1N1 pandemic and SARS, resulting in human fatalities. Just as no sectors could be immune from the contagion effects of a pandemic, none of us now can be absolved from our collective responsibility to uphold international health security."
Mr Gan said beyond international partnerships, the private and people sector have to be roped in.
Forming global networks at all levels is necessary he said, as it helps countries share information and build up capabilities.
And while world economies may be handicapped by the global downturn, Mr Gan said it is critical that resources are not diverted away from enhancing the WHO's abilities to respond to the threats. That is because he said the spread of infectious diseases respects no national boundaries and without a strong defence, its potential impact will be swift and devastating.
While modern technology has allowed real-time information sharing among agencies and individuals, there was also a reminder for the public to turn to credible sources of information in times of crisis.
The World Health Organisation said the social media is a double-edged sword when the world is confronted with a health risk. With many websites offering information, the public will be well-informed. On the other hand, as anybody can write just about anything, this may trigger rumours and spark unnecessary panic.
