Uzbekistan - Viet Nam seeks stronger relations with Uzbekistan

TASHKENT — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung stressed Viet Nam's consistent policy to strengthen and develop the long traditional friendship and multi-faceted co-operation with Uzbekistan while meeting with Uzbek President Islam Karimov in Tashkent yesterday.

He proposed that the two countries continue to enhance exchanges of high-level delegations to increase mutual understanding and create momentum to promote multi-faceted co-operation.
For his part, President Karimov agreed that the two countries should continue promoting co-operation in various fields, including trade, automobile manufacturing and oil and gas.
He praised the effective operation of the Viet Nam National Oil and Gas Group in Uzbekistan and affirmed his support for the two countries' co-operation in this field.
PM Dung discussed a wide range of measures to boost multifaceted co-operation based on economic trade and investment ties during talks with Uzbek counterpart, Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the same day.
Mirziyoyev additionally congratulated Dung on his re-election.
The leaders noted that bilateral trade had remained modest at US$18 million in 2010 and $15.5 million during the first half of the year, having not yet reached its full potential.
Both sides agreed on fostering exports and imports, stepping up trade promotion activities and creating conditions for businesses to set up partnerships and co-operate in such fields as oil and gas, agriculture, fertiliser production, construction materials, electronics, information technology and telecommunications.
The prime ministers applauded the effective oil and gas exploitation carried out by the Viet Nam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) in Uzbekistan as a spearhead in mutually beneficial co-operation.
PM Dung urged Uzbekistan to finalise procedures in signing a contract between PetroVietnam and the Uzbekistani Oil and Gas National Holding Company in Bukhara Khiva.
The Vietnamese Government was ready to facilitate the Uzbekistani Oil and Gas National Holding Company's involvement in oil and gas exploitation projects on Viet Nam's continental shelf, Dung added.
For his part, PM Mirziyoyev affirmed Uzbekistan's support in oil and gas exploitation carried out by Vietnamese contractors.
Following the talks, PM Dung and PM Mirziyoyev witnessed the signing of a co-operative agreement between the two governments based on plant quarantine and a co-operative agreement between the Ha Noi National University and the Tashkent National University.
On the same day, PM Dung met Uzbek Senate Chairman Ilgizar Sobirov, Chairman of the Uzbekistan-Viet Nam Friendship Association Tursunali Kuziev and representatives of the Russian Oil and Gas Group in Uzbekistan.
