More than 45,000
people in Vietnam have contracted dengue fever and 39 have died in the past 9
months, the Ministry of Health reported.
Deputy head of the ministry’s Preventive Health
Department Nguyen Thanh Duong released the figures at a press conference held
by the Ho Chi Minh City Pasteur Institute yesterday.
Duong said most of the patients and deaths were in
southern provinces and cities.
Last year, the number of patients was over 83,700 and the
dead toll was 62, he said.
From the beginning of this year to October 10, over 8,700
people in HCMC contracted dengue fever and 7 of them died.
The conference also heard a report on the use of a new
vaccine, Chimerix Yellow Fever Dengue (CYD14), which was prepared by France’s
Sanofi Pasteur Inc. and is being used clinically in Vietnam on a pilot basis to
constrain dengue fever.
Dr. Tran Ngoc Huu, head of the HCMC Pasteur Institute,
said about 600 children had been inoculated with the new vaccine since last
month.
The pilot vaccination program will last until August
2016, he said.
