Vietnam - Centres give kids haven in flood season

AN GIANG — Caretaking centres for children who live in flood-prone areas in An Phu District in Mekong Delta An Giang Province have been set up in the homes of volunteers to prevent further drowning incidents.
Many parents have to make their livelihood from fishing and have no time to watch over their children during the flood season in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta.
The Government has encouraged other districts to set up such centres that enable parents to devote more free time to work.
Huynh Thi Kim Lien, a resident in An Phu District's Phu Hoi Commune, said the centre had been opened for three years.
This year, three weeks after the beginning of the flood season, 30 children enrolled in the school.
Children faced a high risk of drowning during the flood season, said Lien, adding that she had been so moved by the sight of children's dead bodies floating in the water that she opened her house to take care of the fishermen's children.
A month ago, three-year-old Tran Van Tinh of An Phu District died after his parents left him home alone.
At Lien's house, three volunteer teachers watch the children all day.
To Thi Lan, one of the volunteers, was born and grew up in the area. She said she volunteered because she sympathised with the parents.
Nguyen Thi Tiet Liet is another woman who opened her house in An Phu District's Vinh Hoi Dong Commune for children. Currently, 45 children stay with her.
The province gives Lien funds to buy food for the children.
Nguyen Thi Lieu, whose five-year-old son stays at Liet's house, said she and her husband often took their son with them to work.
But now they feel more free and every day drop off their son at 6am at Liet's house and then pick him up at 5pm.
Nguyen Van Khenh, deputy chairman of An Phu District's People's Committee, said there were a total of eight at-home centres in the district's Vinh Hoi Dong, Vinh Truong, Phu Hoi, and Phu Huu communes. A total of 247 children stayed at the centres, he added.
Three swimming classes for children aged between five and 10 have also been organised in An Phu District.
In addition, local healthcare agencies provide the centres with medicine.
