VietNamNet Bridge – An 11-year-old girl, who never went to school before, surprisingly can solve complicated mathematics questions designed for 12th graders. She has been accepted to become a student of the HCM City based BVIS International School.
Ngoc welcomed by international school
On October 3, 2011, Pham Thanh Ngoc, an 11-year-old girl, who lives in a temporary corrugated iron-made house in Tam Bo commune, Di Linh district of Lam Dong province, began going to the BVIS, where she follows a special training curriculum.
Pham Xuan Thanh, 52, the father of Ngoc, said that the story about Ngoc appeared on Tien phong newspaper several months ago, which has brought good luck to Ngoc. On August 22, when Ngoc caught a bus to the mathematics tutor’s house, the bus driver gave her a copy of newspaper which wrote about Ngoc. Just two days later, Ngoc unexpectedly received a call from BIVS which invited Ngoc to go to HCM City to visit the city and attend an IQ test.
Ngoc has also received an invitation to study at the school from another international school. The physicians of the Hoa Hao hospital in district 1 of HCM City and Pham Khang, a retired teacher in Binh Thanh district have also sent letters to Ngoc’s parents, advising them to bring Ngoc to a suitable training establishment, so that Ngoc can develop her talent.
BVIS’ Board of Management said that Ngoc excellently fulfilled the mathematics test designed for 12th graders. Therefore, the school has decided to grant a full scholarship worth more than 2 billion dong to Ngoc which allows her to study for seven years at the school. The school’s board of management said that this not only allows Ngoc to develop her talents, but also can act as the bridge that helps Ngoc connect the world.
The leaders and the teachers of the school, especially mathematics teachers have drawn up a special schedule for Ngoc.
Under the schedule, Ngoc will sit together with other 7th graders in the same class in literature, history and geography lessons given in Vietnamese language. BVIS has a friendly learning environment, where Ngoc can easily make friends with others and enjoy her time. As for mathematics, Ngoc will be sent to BIS international school in district 2, where Ngoc will sit together with 12th graders, which allows her to promote her special ability at the age of 11.
“Teachers and others students have expressed their admiration to Ngoc’s talents,” said Nguyen Thu Hang, Head of the Enrolment Division of the school.
Education sub-department keeps indifferent to talent
In mid June 2011, Ngoc’s parents once came to the Di Linh district’s education sub-department to report about the special ability of Ngoc, asking the local authorities to allow Ngoc to attend the high school final exams and create favorable conditions to Ngoc to study at higher grades.
Huynh Thi Tuyet, Deputy Head of the Di Linh education sub-department, then was assigned to test Ngoc’s ability. Tuyet asked Ngoc to do the test designed for the students finishing primary school in 2010-2011.
Tuyet told the local press that Ngoc’s could not meet the requirements set up for primary school graduates. She also said that she could not see any signs showing that Ngoc has special talent. Therefore, Tuyet decided to send report about the case to the district’s localities, while she believed that no need to report to the Lam Dong Education and Training Department.
Right after local newspapers report the special talent of Ngoc, the Lam Dong People’s Committee has requested the provincial education and training department to join forces with relevant branches to examine health and ability and report to the provincial authorities.
However, no further step has been over the last five weeks, since the request was made. Meanwhile, Ngoc has been accepted to become a student of BVIS.
