Vietnam - Universities permitted to have separate admission

As of next year, qualified universities will be permitted to hold their own admission exams, instead of the current standardized ones set by the education ministry, Vice Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga told Tuoi Tre newspaper on Wednesday in Hanoi.

To qualify, these universities would have to meet requirements for social reputation, education quality, management capability, and others, Ga said.

Ga said the schools must also stay away from organizing cram classes for candidates before their admission exams.

This is part of a pilot project to give more autonomy to higher education institutions as stipulated in a bill to be submitted to the National Assembly on November 2, Ga said.

Under the project, by 2015, all universities in Vietnam would likely be given full autonomy in personnel, faculties, numbers of enrollees, admission tests, tuition, diploma printing and conferring, and others.

Curricula would be assessed by an independent body rather the ministry.
