Vietnam - Vehicles to be banned around Hoan Kiem Lake at weekend

VietNamNet Bridge – Some streets in the Hanoi’s old quarter and the road around Hoan Kiem Lake will become streets for pedestrians from Friday to Sunday.

Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Transportation Nguyen Xuan Tan said that his agency is working on a project to turn the road around the Hoan Kiem Lake and Dong Xuan, Hang Ngang, Hang Dao, Trang Tien streets into the streets for pedestrians at weekend.

“We are implementing a sociological survey in this area in order to solve all requirements like traveling, emergency aid, fire fighting, toilets, etc.,” Tan said.

The official said that the department will submit the plan to the Hanoi People’s Committee in late October.

Earlier, Lieutenant General Nguyen Duc Nhanh, director of the Hanoi Police Agency, said he hoped Hanoi to have many streets for pedestrians like many cities in the world. Walking is not only good for health but also helps reduce traffic jams and enable tourists and people to do sightseeing.

“Personally, the Hoan Kiem Lake is a treasure of Hanoi. It is the best to make the road around the lake to be from vehicles so visitors can admire the lake view,” general Nhanh said.

The general also suggested turning more streets in Hanoi’s old quarter into the roads for pedestrians.

Hang Dao, Hang Ngang, Hang Duong and Dong Xuan streets, totaling around 1km, are now reserved for pedestrians at weekend nights.
