Vietnam - Vietnam ranks 85/163 countries for environment performance

VietNamNet Bridge – According to the World Bank (WB), Vietnam ranks 85th among 163 countries for the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) with 59 points.

The index indicates Vietnam’s rather good environmental activities.

In Asia, Vietnam stands behind the Philippines with 66 points, Thailand with 62 points and Laos with 60 points, but above China with 49 points, Indonesia with 45 points, Papua New Guinea with 44 points and Mongolia with 43 points.

Vietnam scores high marks in the agriculture and forestry and lower marks in aquaculture, climate change, impacts of air pollution on the ecological system and marine preservation.

Vietnam is also not hailed for its environmental performance in the urbanization and industrialization process as air and water pollution is becoming serious in big cities, like Hanoi and HCM City and surrounding areas.

Increasing pressures on natural resources such as agricultural land, natural forests, aquatic resources and minerals are threatening Vietnam’s biodiversity.

According to the WB’s Vietnam Development Report 2011, Vietnam should pay attention to building mechanisms to encourage the effective use of natural resources to boost economic growth, and the comprehensive management of natural resources towards a sustainable environment.

The EPI is a method of quantifying and benchmarking the environmental performance of a country’s environmental policies, covering both public health and ecosystem vitality.
