Brunei - Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrives today



CHINESE Premier Wen Jiabao will arrive today in Brunei for a two-day official visit to the Sultanate, during which he is expected to witness the signing of an action plan and several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).

Wen's visit, the first by a Chinese Premier, is aimed at enhancing bilateral trust and friendship, and will also mark the 20th anniversary of China and Brunei establishing official ties since 1991.

The Chinese Premier is expected to arrive in Brunei at around 11am, to be welcomed by HRH Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.

The Chinese Premier (pic) will visit Universiti Brunei Darussalam in the afternoon at 3pm where he will deliver a speech, and also plant a Brunei-China friendship tree on the UBD campus. Wen is also expected to donate more than a thousand books to the UBD library.

The UBD visit will be followed by a meet-and-greet session with Chinese nationals and the Brunei Chinese community at the Empire Hotel & Country Club.

His Majesty will host a state banquet at night for the Chinese leader at the Istana Nurul Iman.

On Monday, His Majesty and the Chinese Premier are expected to conduct a closed-door meeting, followed by the witnessing of the signing of several MoUs and an action plan covering the areas of health, energy, forest conservation as well as the establishment of sister cities between Bandar Seri Begawan and Nanjing.

Meanwhile, the Consular Section of the China Embassy in Brunei will be temporarily closed on November 21 according to a press statement from the Embassy.

Normal services will resume on November 22. The Brunei Times
