MUSCAT: The India Medical Tourism
Destination Conference, which was held yesterday at the Oman Chamber of
Commerce and Industry, saw the participation of more than 30 prominent
healthcare providers from India.
The event was held under the aegis of Oman
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) in association with the Embassy of
India, Federation of Indian Chambers of
Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and World Wide Business House.
At the inaugural ceremony, Lt Col. (retd)
Vivekanand Kodikal, regional director (trade and fairs) of FICCI, commented,
“In India, the medical tourism market is estimated at approximately $2billion
by 2012 and it is growing at around 25-30 per cent per annum.
“The sector is expected to double by 2017. The
healthcare industry is steadily facilitating a revolution to enable India to
emerge as a health destination and to fulfil the needs of a million medical
tourists by establishing India’s status as a leading health hub.”
He added, “Among the international patients
coming to India for medical tourism from Middle East, most include treatments
for cardiac, orthopaedic, spinal, neurology, urology, cosmetic.
“We have one of the best technology to support
the healthcare system — availability of
contemporary cutting edge technology; dual source CT scanners; 320 slice CT
scanners; 3 Tesla MRI machines; obotics for minimal access surgeries; hybrid
operation theatres; intra-operative CT/MRI scanners; high precision radiation
therapy equipment and cyber knife.”
Internationally-renowned
On the availability of talent, Kodikal said,
“Highly trained medical personnel with 95 per cent trained in tertiary care in
internationally renowned medical facilities are available.
“Return of medical personnel trained in the
US, the UK and Australia to India and
focus on skill enhancement as an ongoing training measure act to our India’s
benefit.”
S. Srinivasa Babu, first secretary at the
Indian Embassy in Muscat, said that the Embassy of India has been actively
promoting India as a medical tourism
destination.
“We had organised Incredible India show
focusing on medical tourism in 2009 and also Indo-Oman business seminars highlighting medical tourism.
“About 1,000 Omani patients had obtained
medical tourism visas for treatment in India,” he informed.
Dr Anchan, managing director, Wordwide
Business House and the main co-ordinator of the event, said while addressing
the audience, “India has the cost advantage, the technology and clinical
expertise and manpower to be an international health destination and here today
we have brought together more than 30 hospitals to showcase their facilities.
“A growing number of specialised private hospitals are on the threshold of a
boom in medical tourism, positioning themselves as the best destinations for
procedures ranging from coronary bypasses to orthopaedic surgery at the most
affordable costs.”
Among the prominent hospitals/organisations
taking part in this conference include AMRI Hospital, Kolkata, Amrita Institute of Medical Science and
Research Centre, Andhra Pradesh
Tourism, Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi,
Asian Heart Institute and Research Centre, Asian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), A
Super Speciality Hospital & Cancer Centre,
AyurVAID Hospitals, Fortis Healthcare (India) Ltd, Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS),
Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals, etc.
Earlier, Tariq Al Khaburi director, OCCI,
welcomed Jayesh Ranjan, secretary to the Government of Andhra Pradesh and
Venugopal V., managing director of Karnataka Udyog Mitra.
Later, business to business meetings were also
organised.
