Indonesian
police have arrested three more men from a terror cell that planned to attack
the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta, police spokesman Colonel Boy Rafli Amar told
reporters yesterday.
Two M-16 assault rifles, two guns, including
an FN pistol, 888 bullets of various calibres, and six magazines were seized
following the arrests late on Saturday and Sunday.
The arrested men - among them a vegetable
seller and a fried rice street vendor - are from East Jakarta, and West Java's
Bekasi and Tangerang, police said.
The trio are identified by their initials S,
DWT and SGO.
The police had earlier said that a group led
by ringleader Abu Umar, or Abu Omar alias Zulfikar, 41, aimed to target
Singaporeans leaving the embassy.
The plan came to light after Abu Umar and 10
of his followers were arrested in Java in July. Abu Umar's cell also planned to
attack several police stations.
Meanwhile, a Xinhua news agency report
yesterday said that Indonesian police would conduct more searches for firearms
and weapons that the recently arrested men might have hidden in heavily wooded
areas around a state university in Jakarta.
The police had found several weapons,
including assault rifles and a pistol, and live bullets in the woods on the
grounds of the University of Indonesia (UI).
"We plan to undertake a further search in
the forest," said a spokesman from the national police headquarters.
"Further investigation against those
involved in the case is under way at the moment, including the possibility of
UI students' involvement in the case," he added.
