VN, Sri Lanka businesses look to promote trade

The Vietnamese Government would create the most favourable conditions for Sri Lankan businesses to find investment and trade opportunities in Viet Nam, said President Truong Tan Sang

Receiving a Sri Lanka business delegation led by Sri Lanka National Chamber of Commerce President Asoka Hettigoda in Ha NoI yesterday, Sang said the visit was a good sign to speed up Viet Nam-Sri Lanka trade and economic relations.

He said he hoped businesses from the two countries would take advantage of opportunities to co-operate and enter into joint ventures, contributing to raising bilateral trade turnover to US$1 billion by 2015.

Asoka Hettigoda said Sri Lankan businesses were interested in textiles and garments, precious stones, health, rubber and rubber wood, machines and tourism.

The delegation's visit aimed at not only studying the local market, but also setting up long-term investments in Viet Nam, he said.

Spanish foreign minister holds talks in Ha Noi

Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Spain's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Juan Antonio Yanez Barnuevo held deputy ministerial-level political consultations in the capital city yesterday.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also received Juan Antonio Yanez Barnuevo on the same day.
At the meetings, the two sides said they would strengthen the exchange of different level visits between delegations.

They agreed to continue co-ordinating and supporting each other at multilateral and international forums while affirming to continue creating favourable conditions to strengthen co-operation in economy, trade and investment between the two sides.

They reached a consensus to implement Spain's official development assistance projects in Viet Nam on schedule with due attention given to building the metro route project in HCM City.
Satisfied with the two sides' co-operation efficiency in culture, education and tourism in the past years, they agreed to co-ordinate and organise activities to commemorate 35 years of their diplomatic relations by 2012.

The two sides also exchanged views about common concerns such as the global economic crisis, public debt in Europe and ASEAN-EU co-operation.

VN, Canada legislatures to enhance co-operation

Legislative bodies from Viet Nam and Canada should enhance co-operation to realise signed agreements between the two nations, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said yesterday while receiving Canadian Governor General David Johnston.

Aspects that needed stronger co-operation were politics, diplomacy, healthcare, trade and investment, he added.

Hung also said he appreciated Canada's support for Viet Nam in socio-economic development projects.

Despite economic growth, the country was still geared up to fight poverty and guarantee social security for people, he said.

He also told his guest that the reached agreements of the two governments would be realised effectively, contributing to friendly bilateral ties.
Johnston also said he hoped his visit, the first State-level one to Viet Nam in his position, would help elevate bilateral ties to a new height.

He spoke highly of Vietnamese efforts to accomplish the Millennium Development Goals, particularly poverty reduction.

The guest also said there was more untapped potential between the two countries.

Also yesterday, Johnston talked with students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ha Noi.

Johnston said Canada was home to 250,000 Vietnamese people who had made contributions to economics, socio-culture and education.

Canada has a diversified culture with no discrimination against immigrants, he said.
Rector of the university Nguyen Van Khanh expressed hope that the university will receive Canada's assistance and co-operation in human resource development, training and research.

At a talks panel with a multicultural theme, Prof Luong Van Hy from the Toronto University of Canada emphasised the need to preserve traditional culture whilst learning from other cultures.

Meanwhile Canadian-Vietnamese writer Kim Thuy said each place had its own cultural identity and residents had to import culture to where they lived.

The scholars also answered students' questions on cultural identity and preserving national cultural identity.

The same day, Governor General Johnston paid a floral tribute at the Monument of Heroic Martyrs, visited
the Temple of Literature and an organic vegetable production establishment in Yen My Commune, Thanh Tri District.
