Laos
and Viet Nam continue to nurture their steadfast relations, friendship, special
solidarity and comprehensive cooperation through the exchange of visits by
delegations at many levels.
Head of the Commission for External Relations
of the Communist Party of Viet Nam's Central Committee Hoang Binh Quan led a
Vietnamese delegation to visit Laos on November 3-7 in response to an
invitation from his Lao counterpart Dr Thongloun Sisoulith.
Following his arrival in Vientiane yesterday,
Quan held bilateral talks with Thongloun, who is Deputy Prime Minister and
Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Head of the External Relations Committee of
the Party Central Committee, to discuss and review cooperation projects between
the external relations committees of Laos and Vietnam over past years.
They discussed plans for future cooperation
before discussing issues of mutual interest occurring in Laos and Viet Nam, as
well as in the region and the world.
Quan, who is a Party Central Committee member
of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, also called on Secretary General of the Lao
People's Revolutionary Party and President of Laos Choummaly Sayasone to
further discuss the enhancement of relations between Laos and Viet Nam.
During the meeting, Quan briefed the Lao
president on development progress in Viet Nam and the outcomes of bilateral
talks between delegations from the external relations committees of the two
countries.
Choummaly expressed appreciation for the visit
by Quan and congratulated the efforts made by the external relations committees
of the two countries in contributing to consolidating traditional relations,
special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Viet Nam.
The president expressed his belief that the
input of the two committees will contribute to bringing prosperity and
well-being to the people of Laos and Viet Nam.
Laos attaches great importance to enhancing
its relations with Viet Nam and tries to make every effort to nurture its
cooperative relations with its neighbour.
According to the Lao Ministry of Planning and
Investment, Viet Nam is among the leading foreign investors in Laos, with
Vietnamese firms investing in 252 projects in Laos in the decade between 2000
and 2010, worth a total of about US$2.77 billion.
Vietnam is the third biggest trading partner
of Laos after Thailand and China. Two-way trade reached US$490 million in 2010
and both sides agreed to strive for trade turnover of US$2 billion by 2015.
