Malaysia - Boy scores 4As despite missing half of school year

KUALA TERENGGANU, Terengganu - Despite only attending 98 of the 195 school days this year, Year Six student Mohd Saiful Aizam Kasuraidi still managed to score 4As and 1B in his Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination.

The 12-year-old, who is the only child in his family, had to skip school at SK Padang Hiliran to care for his 41-year-old mother Sadariah Ismail.

She is suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus which causes acute and chronic inflammation of various tissues in the body.

The boy also had to take care of his ailing grandmother Limah Jusoh, 71.

Mohd Saiful said his father Kasuraidi Mat Jusoh, 36, who is a construction worker, would cook the meals while he handled chores such as washing clothes and cleaning the house.

"I want to go to school so much but I have to take care of both of them," he told The Star.

Mohd Saiful said he did his studies in the evening after his father came back from work.

"Some classmates gave me a hard time for not going to school but I did not pay attention to their teasing as I knew I had to sacrifice for my family," he added.

On his UPSR results, he said he wished to study medicine and become a doctor.

Meanwhile, Sadariah expressed surprise at her son's results.

"My husband and I thought that he would only score one 1A because he had skipped so many classes," she said.

She felt guilty as her son missed almost half of the school year.

"My husband has to work to support the family so our son is our only hope. His results is the best news we have heard in a long time," she added.
