Malaysia - Health Ministry sets sights on new Malaysian drivers as organ donors

The Malaysian Health Ministry plans to work with the Transport Ministry to encourage new drivers to become organ donors when applying for their driving licence.

Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Saturday that although there were about 170,000 registered organ donors in the country so far, his ministry had received only 33 organ donations this year.

He was speaking at a press conference after launching the TopVision Eye Specialist Centre in Seksyen U13 Setia Alam, near here.

Liow added that there would also be campaigns to attract younger organ donors at universities and colleges.

"We also try to go to universities and colleges to encourage the young to participate in organ donation.

"We need more to participate, as we definitely don't have enough (organ donors)," said Liow.
