Nepal - EU, US, Japan welcome Nepal's peace deal

The European Union together with Norway and Switzerland, State Department, US and Japan hailed the landmark peace deal signed between Nepal’s major political parties on Tuesday evening.

"The signing of the seven-point agreement resolves many of the long-outstanding issues in Nepal’s peace process. As friends and partners in Nepal's development process we welcome the fresh consensus among the political parties, which we hope will help fully implement the Comprehensive Peace Accord,” a statement released by the EU on Wednesday read.

We encourage the government and all the political parties to now give high priority to the implementation of the agreement, including the drafting of a new democratic and inclusive constitution, which aims at ensuring lasting peace and stability in Nepal, the statement further read.

"We welcome the flexibility of all sides that has allowed progress on the integration and rehabilitation of former Maoist combatants," it added.

The European Union, Norway and Switzerland pledge their continued commitment and full support to the peace process, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said in the statement.

"We encourage all those involved to implement these agreements. The United States remains committed to supporting the ongoing peace process as appropriate," the spokesperson added, "We commend all parties for their statesmanship and leadership in forging this consensus, which we believe is a crucial step toward ensuring a democratic, stable, and prosperous future for Nepal."

Likewise, Japan also hailed the peace deal and extended its heartfelt congratulations to the major political parties in Nepal on reaching a historic seven-point agreement on the peace process, constitution writing, and the process of formulating a national consensus government.

"The agreement is the clear embodiment of the constructive spirit of mutual understanding among political leaders and symbolizes a major breakthrough towards achieving the aspirations of the people of Nepal. Japan sincerely wishes that this agreement be implemented as per the agreed schedule through the continued efforts of the political parties; and thus, the people of Nepal will be able to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement with renewed aspirations," a statement released by the Japanese embassy read.
