Singapore - Green Man Plus extended to another 240 pedestrian crossings

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be implementing the Green Man Plus scheme to another 240 pedestrian crossings by the first quarter of 2013.

The extension of the card-activated system, which gives senior citizens up to five seconds more of green man time to cross the road, will cover 13 housing estates - in Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Bukit Merah, Chinatown, Geylang, Hougang, Kallang, Marine Parade, Outram, Queenstown, Rochor, Tampines, and Toa Payoh.

The pilot scheme which started in October 2009 is currently implemented at five locations in Singapore.

Senior citizens activate the Green Man Plus function by scanning their CEPAS-compliant concession cards at card readers mounted above the standard push button on the traffic light poles.

LTA is currently working with the National Council of Social Service and the Voluntary Welfare Organisations to extend the scheme to persons with physical and sensory disabilities.

Besides the lighted red LED indicators that are currently in place to indicate that the green man time will be extended for the next cycle, newer card readers will also produce a sound and vibration alert to notify the user.

LTA is targeting to extend the scheme to a total of 500 pedestrian crossings by 2014.
