University
of Houston Law Center is a leader in the US, but it is also becoming a popular
choice for Asian students. It offers unique transitional courses that equip
international lawyers with US qualifications alongside a comprehensive spread
of highly relevant specializations.
The Law Center delivers one of the best
value-for-money law degrees in the US market today. This, combined with its
strong international network, makes UH Law Center a favorite for students from
Asia looking to secure international legal credentials. Students study under
exceptional faculty members with extensive international experience.
US
Credentials
For Asian students, one of the major
attractions of studying in the US is the chance to bolster their resume with US
credentials. International law is complicated, and any lawyer planning liaise
with US firms will benefit from a US-based education.
UH Law Center operates a summer program that
takes foreign-trained lawyers and equips them with a US law degree on short
turnaround. The process begins with a 13-week summer semester starting in June,
followed by a full-time fall semester. By December, students have the
qualifications needed to offer legal services in the US.
During the summer course, all of the classes
are conducted by professors with foreign training. This ensures that the
transition into the US legal system is guided by professors who understand the
legal environments their students are coming from. During the fall semester,
students integrate with American JD and LLM students, creating opportunities to
network and work with students from the US.
Rankings
This top-tier law school ranks 56th in the US
according to US News & World Report. Specialized concentrations within the
school rank even higher and garner significant international attention. The
center’s Health Law concentration is particularly well-recognized, with a #2
national ranking. The Intellectual Property concentration is seventh in the US.
Other third-party organizations rank the law
center even higher. The National Law Journal placed it in the top 40, while
Judging the Law Schools ranks it 30th. Many of these selection committees base
their decision on the volume of successful graduates emerging from the
University of Houston Law Center.
Specializations
UH Law Center offers more than 200 courses,
giving students the chance to add a specialized slant to their law degree. Six
official concentrations are on offer:
Health
Law
The University of Houston Law Center launched
its Health Law and Policy Institute in the 1970s. The program emphasizes
interdisciplinary studies, bridging a range of health-related fields.
Students have access to the largest medical
center in the world – the Texas Medical Center. This is a cluster of 49 medical
institutes, 14 hospitals and 2 specialty institutes. It is a gold mine for
students specializing in health law, as they are able to explore and conduct
research related to virtually every legal and policy-related issue in the
healthcare sector.
Students in the Health Law concentration are
encouraged to get involved at the institute. The sheer size of the Texas
Medical Center means that there is guaranteed to be something going on that’s
perfectly suited to your particular area of interest. Many Law Center students
assist with academic publications, including those printed in the Houston
Journal of Health Law and Policy.
Intellectual
Property
In today’s global economy, the Intellectual
Property and Information Law concentration is especially relevant to
international students, who explore every aspect of intellectual property law
including patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets.
Intellectual property studies combine with
information law. This covers issues related to software, the Internet,
databases and e-commerce. The Intellectual Property Center maintains strong
international networks.
Energy,
Environment and Natural Resources
Asia’s developing nations and emerging
superpowers are hotbeds for breakthroughs in energy and natural resource
development. Students are trained in the international legal implications of
energy production, natural resource conservation and pollution prevention, all
of which are directly relevant to professional life in Houston, a major
producer of petroleum in the US.
Tax
Law
International tax law is complicated, and multi-national firms are in need of well-trained legal staff that can navigate the complex and ever-changing web of international taxes. In this program, students learn to plan tax strategies that take future changes into account.
This is another major draw for Asian students.
Lawyers with a handle on international commerce and law are in high demand.
Students learn how to apply comparative and international law in a US context,
with plenty of room for specific specializations.
Foreign
Scholars
Another popular avenue for Asian students is the Foreign Scholars program. Students work closely with an advisor to piece together a bespoke law degree that centers on their specific needs and interests. Students can also enter the UH Law Center through the Foreign Scholars program and earn certificates in any of the above concentrations.
