Vietnam - Educators warn of “school gangsters”

VietNamNet Bridge – The appearance of a lot of unofficial gangs operating under the “law of the jungle” at schools, lead by the “god farther” has turned the school environment into the obsession of many students.

In 2000, the school counseling was kicked off at two schools, Truong Cong Dinh semi-state owned school and Ha Huy Tap state owned school in Binh Thanh district. In 2008-2008, the HCM City Education and Training Department instructed schools to set up school counseling divisions in order to help students grow well psychologically and physically.

However, the school counseling has not helped much. Gangs have been established at many schools, which attack students and rob money. A lot of students complain that as they do not cooperate with the gangs, they have been boycotted by other students, which makes them get afraid of going to school.

The students, who are admitted to the teams, can be “protected” by the gang leaders and can get a lot of “benefits.” Meanwhile, those, who do not belong to any gangs, would be isolated and annoyed all the time.

Feeling unsafe when going to school

T, a 6th grader of C Secondary School in district 3 of HCM City, was boycotted just because he refused to join the gang lead by a 7th female student. T got afraid of going to school and she always feels unsafe when staying in the class. Therefore, T tried to leave schools right after the school hours as immediately as possible. She decided not to have lunch at schools, not to go to school toilets.

Especially, T did not dare to become an excellent student, and she just tried to get the average mark of five. If she was too excellent, she would face the slander from other students.

HL, a student of the Cu Chi Secondary School, was also isolated by the classmates. “Since I was good at learning, the classmates did not want to make friends with me. They gathered to chat, or go shopping instead of learning,” she explained.

“There were several groups in the class, and you should belong to one of them, or you would be the outsiders. Every group was led by a student, a rich playboy,” she added.

H, a student of L School in district 3, related that there is a fan club in the class, which gathered the ones who admire a “hot boy” at the school. However, H refused to join the club. As a result, the information about H’s private life was then spread out at the school. H felt so embarrassed that she did not dare to go to school the next days, and she has just returned to school after a lot of days living in distress and fear.

NTT, a 8th grader of N Secondary School, related that one day she read an entry on Facebook which wrote that she was an ulcer that needed to be eliminated. The author of the entry called on people to boycott NTT, a turkey-cock. As a result, the classmates kept away from communicating with NTT.

Students also can be robbers

Vu Dinh Son, a parent of a 7th student in Binh Thanh district said that his child asked him to give 50,000 dong every Saturday, saying that he needed the money to pay for private tutoring classes. Later, when Son called the teacher, he realized that students did not have to pay so much money.

Finally, the boy admitted that he needed money to pay to a gang leader as a fee for the protection against being bullied.

Son then realized that since his son was small and timid, he had to pay money to big students to keep safe during the time at school.

Son decided to report the case to the teacher and asked the teacher to help settle the problem. Son did not dare to punish the gang leader, because he feared that this would make the situation more serious and his son would face more serious problems with the gang leader.
