Vietnam - Information Day on Exports to the EU market held in HCMC

Thu 3 Nov 2011

Ho Chi Minh City, 2nd November 2011 – Within the framework of the “Capacity Building on Trade Policy for Vietnamese Business Associations” sub-project funded by European Union in the EU-Vietnam MUTRAP III, European Chamber of Commerce to Vietnam (EuroCham), along with its Association partners in the sub-project, held an Information Day workshop on “Exports to the EU market”.

The workshop, the last activity of the sub-project, aims to keep Vietnamese enterprises abreast of EU market trends and opportunities; provide an understanding of Eurozone crisis and its impact on exports from developing countries; and present ways to optimize enterprises’ benefits from information sources available. Last but not least, the workshop serves as a chance to introduce potential services of the European Trade Information Center (ETIC) after the end of the sub-project.

The workshop hall was filled up with interest and special attention of nearly 200 participants, including representatives from some key Vietnamese Business Associations (VBAs), senior managers from Vietnamese exporting enterprises in various sectors, and the media/press.

For the former, there were representatives from Can Tho Business Association, Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association, Handicraft and Wood Industry Association, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Young Business People of Association of HCMC, Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers; Vietnam Paint and Printing Ink Association, Ho Chi Minh Union of Business Association and Vietnam Rubber Association. Whereas, the Vietnamese exporting enterprises were mainly from such sectors as seafood, furniture, textile/garment, agriculture, etc.

With the “EU Market Trends and Opportunities for Vietnamese exporters” topic, Mr. Albert Franceskinj, Attorney at Law (Paris Bar) and Managing Partner of Fidal Franceskinj Chazard & Partners Co. Ltd., started his presentation by getting the audience familiar with WTO main rules and the EU-Vietnam FTA prospect. He also touched upon the EU market access requirements, defence measures; and withdrew some recommendations for Vietnamese enterprises when exporting to the EU market.

Afterwards, Dr. Vo Tri Thanh, Vice President of the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM), and Mr. Sanjay Kalra, IMF Senior Resident Representative for Vietnam, provided the audience with two different perspectives on the impact of Eurozone crisis on exports from developing countries. Both reached one common agreement that there are still rooms and optimistic signals for Vietnamese exporting enterprises in the current difficult context, e.g. other EU member state markets beside Greece, East Asia market, etc.

The second session addressed the concern of VBAs and enterprises in information exploitation. Mr. Marcus Hermann, General Manager of Market-Edge Asia (Vietnam) Ltd., delivered a presentation on the importance of information and the information sources available for enterprises. He analysed the pros and cons of each information source, i.e. Google, Yell, Alibaba; and introduced the Kompass tool.

Dr. Matthias Duehn, EuroCham Executive Director, finished the workshop with the introduction of the ETIC’s potential services. He emphasized that the services aim to provide value-added information to the Vietnamese enterprises on the EU market; and seek for finance to run the center in a sustainable way. These services include Understanding the EU market, Entering the EU market, Partnering in the EU market, Partnering in the Vietnamese market, and Advertising on the ETIC webpage. The workshop was successfully concluded and left a very good impression on participants. The workshop discussion marked the two-way interaction and reflected the interest of Vietnamese business community in such topics as EU-Vietnam FTA, channels to promote Vietnam-EU trade relations, export procedures to the EU market and EU market access requirements. The participants expressed their wish to participate in such workshops in the future to keep them abreast of the EU market.
