VietNamNet Bridge – Whether to use the rod in education has become a controversial topic.
If typing “giao vien danh hoc sinh” (teachers beat students) on Google, one would get nearly 20 million results, including tens of video clips and arguments. While a lot of people condemn the behavior of using violence in education, others express their sympathy with teachers.
Teachers don’t beat students for nothing
In early November 2011, the story that Vo Thien Tam, a teacher of the Hoa Chau High School in Thua Thien-Hue province beat a student with a broom stirred up the public. The teacher said that she whipped the student because the student was not serious when he stood in a line, he did not learn lessons and do home exercises.
Prior to that, in May 2011, a lot of parents of the Nhat Tao Primary School in district 10 of HCM City, expressed their discontent about the violent behavior of a physical exercise teacher. There were many students who were slapped by the teachers in the face, beaten on the head, kicked in the hip.
In April 2011, a French language teacher used a ruler beating continuously into the arms of Huynh Nhat Thien, a student of the Tan Lap 2 Primary School in Nha Trang City.
There are a lot of reasons cited to explain the violent behaviors of the teachers. However, there is always a common reason – the lack of restraint of the teachers.
In 2009, a history teacher of the Nguyen Khuyen semi-state owned school in Dien Ban district in Quang Nam province used hands, legs and timber bar beat a 10th grader who was then hospitalized with severe injuries. The student was “punished” by the teacher because the student did not express his opinion, though he knew the answer to the question raised by the teacher.
Just several months before that time, Nguyen Hoang Long, a 9th grader of the Dong Da High School in Da Lat City of Lam Dong province, was seriously beaten by the teacher because he was late to the class and did not take notes during the lesson period. A mathematics teacher of the Xuan Dieu Secondary School in My Tho City of Tien Giang province beat three students right before the class because they did not fulfill home exercises. One of the three students then suffered hand fracture.
As such, the main reason behind the cases was the unreasonable attitude to studying. Most of the students who were the victims in the cases, were disruptive, lazy, who did not have serious attitude to studying.
Teaching and soothing to obedience
A lot of parents are on teachers’ side in these cases, saying that students need to be punished to become better.
Nguyen Dung Nhi, the mother of Nguyen Hoang, a third grader of a primary school in Cau Giay district in Hanoi, said that sometimes, Hoang receives a whip on his hand because he was neglecting during the lessons. However, Nhi does not criticize the teacher for the behavior, saying that the punishment would help the boy become more obedient.
A teacher, who asks to be not named, said that she is always under the hard pressure because some students are too lazy and arrogant. “I sometimes beat them, because I feel sorry for them,” she said.
The teacher said that when she went to school she sometimes received a whip on the hands, which made her feel vexed. However, now, when working as a teacher, she believes that the rod can help make students better and more responsible. “Spare the rod and spoil the child,” she said.
Professor Nguyen Viet Thinh, President of the Hanoi University of Education, said that in the past, teachers had the right to beat students with rulers when students made mistakes, but nowadays, the teachers would be sacked for the same behavior. He said that teachers are also people, who sometimes cannot control their temper and beat students, and people should keep generous when thinking about teachers.
